Garlic took center stage at the Platte County Community Garden as gardening enthousiasts...

including experienced Master Gardeners, members of the public, and very young gardeners—gathered for a hands-on workshop on growing, harvesting, and storing one of the world's oldest cultivated crops.
The program introduced participants to garlic's colorful history, the differences between hardneck and softneck varieties, planting techniques, seasonal care, harvest timing, and proper curing methods based on research-based University of Missouri Extension recommendations.

After the presentation, everyone headed into the garden's raised bed area to harvest mature ripened garlic from the demonstration beds. Participants carefully lifted the bulbs, trimmed the excess foliage, and bundled the garlic for curing before storage.
One of the morning's highlights came when two young visitors scratched a freshly harvested garlic clove and discovered its unmistakable aroma. Their delighted reactions brought smiles from everyone nearby and perfectly captured the spirit of the Master Gardener program—learning by doing.
The workshop ended with the usual tidy up, and a fun tradition: participants sampled a little lemon juice after discussing its long-standing reputation for freshening one's breath after eating garlic.

Events like this reflect the mission of the University of Missouri Extension Master Gardener program: Helping Others Learn to Grow.
Whether participants came to learn something new or share years of gardening experience, everyone left with practical knowledge and a deeper appreciation for growing garlic.
